green initiatives

demonstrating their concern for the planet, hyatt regency scottsdale participates in a viable environmental program throughout the resort.

For over fifteen years, Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa has engaged in a tradition of environmental consciousness, and through the implementation of many conservation programs, both guests and employees have made contributions to preserve our environment. The Resort’s commitment is all-encompassing, including energy efficiency and waste minimization, environmental health and safety for our employees, environmental education for our guests and community outreach programs.

Our Environmental Program reduces our energy use, water consumption, chemical additives to man-made water features, and the amount of waste we generate. In addition, purchasing guidelines include environmental considerations. More than recycling, this comprehensive Environmental Program has been designed to minimize consumption of our natural resources. Our emphasis for the program is not the monetary rewards, but positive benefits to the community and the future stability of tourism in the area. The initiatives taken by the resort have reduced energy consumption, solid waste landfill charges, and water usage; all of these lower operating expenses.

Recycling programs are managed throughout the resort including using water purifying systems as an alternative to bottled water and recycling used cooking oil to create low emissions biodiesel fuel. Hyatt’s employees participate in the county’s clear air campaign and trip reduction program as Hyatt subsidizes bus passes and supports carpoolers. The resort’s “Green Team” of employees meet monthly to uncover new areas of focus and evaluate successes.

Major investments have been made to the physical plant of the resort to advance our commitment to the environment, as well. We begin with energy efficient lighting in all areas, environmentally friendly guest room appointments such as post consumer material in the carpeting, low water usage faucets, in-room thermostats with occupancy sensors, and ultimately have redesigned our building systems to include solar domestic hot water heating for all guest rooms, ultra-efficient cooler plant which reduces annual water consumption by over one million gallons and electrical usage by 40%. These are just some of the many initiatives that reduce our daily impact on the environment.

Hyatt's Lagoon Pond adds to the beauty of the resort and is now maintained naturally by aquatic life. We no longer use harsh chemicals to prevent algae growth, since most chemicals will eventually affect the ground water. We conserve ground water by utilizing the Gainey Ranch Waste Water Reclamation Plant, a water treatment facility drawing water from the city's main sewer line. The reclamation plant irrigates the 27-hole golf course.

Novan Solar Inc. of Golden, CO installed one of the nation's largest solar hot water systems ever built for a hotel at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Novan solar thermal system provides domestic hot water for guest rooms, the main laundry services room and all the restaurants at the 492-room Scottsdale AZ resort.

The resort is committed to further reducing our environmental impact by creating a partnership with group meeting planners and their attendees, allowing them to participate in these important initiatives. The resort’s new “Meet and Be Green” program asks each group to follow thirteen “green” initiatives that will provide important benefits to our environment. In return, the resort will provide the benefit of a 3% rebate on all audio/visual, and food and beverage billed to the group’s master account. This new program offers company and association executives and meeting planners an opportunity to hold a legitimately “green” meeting, with initiatives that truly have impact, and at the same time ensure savings for their organization.
